Sales/Use/Withholding Tax Permit Applications:

It may take several weeks to process an application for an Iowa sales/use/withholding tax permit.  You may begin making sales, collecting tax, and withholding as soon as you submit an application; you do not have to wait to receive your permit number.

Sales/Use Tax:

There is no charge for a sales/use tax permit.  You will be mailed a letter containing your Business eFile Number (BEN), your permit number, and a printed permit.  You are not required to display the printed permit; however, it should be readily available to prove you have one.  Once issued, a sales tax permit is effective until it is canceled by the retailer or revoked by the Department.

Sales/use tax returns should be filed electronically through the eFile & Pay system.  If a return is due prior to a permit number being issued, a paper return may be filed with “applied for” entered where the permit number would normally appear.

Withholding:

Likewise, there is no charge to register for Iowa withholding.  You will be mailed a letter containing your Business eFile Number (BEN) and Iowa permit number.

Withholding returns should be filed electronically through the eFile & Pay system.  If a return is due prior to a permit number being issued, a paper return may be filed with your Federal ID Number entered where the permit number would normally appear.
