Income Tax Refunds Faster with Electronically Filed Returns
This year more than ever electronic filing of individual income tax returns is vital, according to Mark Schuling, Director of the Iowa Department of Revenue.
“We enter the tax season with reduced staffing levels and no temporary employees due to budget constraints,” Schuling said. “We apologize for the inconvenience and understand the impact on paper return filers.”
Because processing paper is time-intensive, paper filers may wait up to 16 weeks for their refunds. E-filers receive their refunds in less than two weeks and have a variety of e-file options.
Most tax professionals offer electronic filing, and software is available for purchase. In addition, on January 15 the Department will have online electronic filing options on its Web site -- www.iowa.gov/tax/. Taxpayers who qualify can e-file their federal and Iowa returns free of charge. Those who do not qualify can file for a fee.
“We encourage online filers to go to our Web site to file,” Schuling said. “It is easy to navigate and taxpayers can be certain the online companies have been approved by our Department.”
Last year, 74% of Iowa returns were filed electronically. Each year the Department processes approximately 1.5 million returns.
