Iowa Dept. of Revenue (IDR) Releases Updated Tax Guidance: Disaster Emergency Tax Penalty Relief

Governor Kim Reynolds authorized a Proclamation of Disaster Emergency in response to the recent floods. IDR has updated tax guidance on how people affected by the floods, including those who may have sales tax returns due on July 1, can seek tax penalty relief:

  • Disaster Emergency Tax Penalty Relief
    Due to recent storms, Governor Reynolds has declared several counties in Iowa to be disaster areas. For taxpayers who may have missed deadlines to file or pay Iowa taxes because records were destroyed by those storms, tax penalty relief is available. This guidance describes how you can request penalty relief by submitting a penalty waiver request on GovConnectIowa or by submitting a Penalty Waiver Request form.

Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Tax Relief

The Internal Revenue Service announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in Iowa that were affected by severe storms and tornadoes that occurred on April 26, 2024. These taxpayers now have until Oct. 15, 2024, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments.
